Are you wondering about gender, your identity, or that of a loved one, or others?

Are you cross-dressing, transgender, or maybe just curious to understand what it means?

What is the difference between transsexual people and trans, and is this term still used today? Are trans people automatically gay? Is a trans woman who loves a woman a lesbian?

And since when have transgender people existed? Is this really new, this “trans wave” that some sensationalist media talk about?

So many questions you might be asking yourself, as many others do.

Two References and Some Answers

To answer these questions or learn more, two books published in 2024 can shed light on these inquiries: “Une histoire de genres” by Lexie and “Ceci n’est pas un livre sur le genre” by Morgan N. Lucas.

These works, written by trans authors (one MtF, the other FtM – but wait, what does MtF or FtM mean?), provide clear and accessible answers through definitions, personal anecdotes, and a deconstruction of common misconceptions.

These two books, published this year, have become key references on the subject of transidentity.

They address many questions we often ask ourselves about gender, with simple explanations, memorable anecdotes, and thought-provoking reflections.

Let’s take the time to see what they share and how I can also help you on your journey. (without any spoilers!)

Une histoire de genre, guide pour comprendre et défendre les transidentités

Une histoire de genres by Lexie

Lexie, a trans activist and passionate educator, but also an author, speaker, and trainer on gender, inclusivity, and LGBT+ rights, offers with “Une histoire de genres” a true journey through time and ideas.

This book shows that gender has never been fixed: it is a social and cultural construct that has evolved throughout the centuries.

Lexie breaks down complex concepts clearly and accessibly, while sharing poignant stories and inclusive perspectives.

Highlights of the book:

• A historical perspective to understand the evolution of gender concepts.
• Personal anecdotes that make the message vivid and authentic.
• A pedagogical approach that deconstructs prejudices.

Lexie emphasizes that transgender identities are not a "recent fad" but a human reality present for centuries.

She covers historical and cultural examples showing that diverse gender identities have been recognized and respected in various societies across time.

For example, she mentions Hijras in India, Two-Spirit people in Indigenous North American cultures, as well as diverse gender practices in ancient Egypt.

This historical perspective demonstrates that trans identities are not a modern invention, but an integral part of human history, thus helping to dismantle prejudices and promote better understanding and … acceptance.

Ceci n’est pas un livre sur le genre by Morgan N. Lucas

Morgan N. Lucas, therapist and trainer, offers a book both playful and thoughtful that goes beyond simple definitions to invite each reader to question their own ideas about gender.

You’ll also appreciate the quality of the format. It’s a beautiful book, and I admit I loved the Troll’s intervention!

Written in an unpretentious tone, this work addresses various themes: binarity, trans and non-binary identities, societal expectations, and life journeys.

Highlights of the book:

• Direct answers to common questions about gender.
• An accessible and inclusive approach, suited for a wide audience.
• Concrete examples that help better understand the realities of those concerned.

This book is ideal to start a personal reflection or to dismantle stereotypes still all too present.

For example, Morgan humorously answers questions like: “Is a trans woman who loves a woman a lesbian?”, while inviting a reconsideration of rigid categories.
